Tracking Instagram Story and Tag Mentions through Meta's Messenger API
Tracking Instagram Story and Tag Mentions through Meta's Messenger API
Updated over a week ago

Thanks to Tagger's integration with Meta, you can connect your Instagram Business Accounts to track Instagram Stories and Posts in which your Brands were mentioned. Stories and Posts tracked this way will be available in Tagger.

Connecting your Instagram Accounts

To start tracking your Instagram Story and Tag Mentions, please go to your Integrations Tab in the Organization's settings and click on Instagram Story and Tag Mentions.

After clicking "Add Instagram Account", you will be redirected to Instagram's experience of adding your accounts. Please select the Instagram Business Accounts you would like to track Story and Tag Mentions for, as well as the Facebook Pages connected to these Instagram Accounts.

⚠️ In case you already connected Instagram Story Mentions before Mar 12th, please go through the "Add Instagram Account" flow again to grant Tagger additional Tag Mentions permissions, as well as make sure that your Stories will keep working after Apr 12th.

Please make sure that your Instagram Business Account DM settings allow third-party apps to access your messages. Here's how to do it:

  1. Navigate to Settings & Privacy for your Instagram Business Profile.

  2. Scroll down and find Messages and story replies.

  3. Tap Message controls.

  4. Make sure that Allow Access to Messages under Connected Tools is turned to ON.

Please keep in mind that without the above adjustment in your Instagram Settings, we will not be able to track your Instagram Story Mentions

Invite collaborators to connect Instagram accounts

If you do not have access to your company's Instagram accounts, you can use our additional functionality to invite people from outside your organization (collaborators) to connect these Instagram accounts to your organization.

How to do that?

  1. In the Instagram Story and Tag Mentions click the “Manage Collaborators” button in the “Invite people to connect Instagram accounts” part.

  2. Type your social media admin e-mail address and click “Invite Collaborator.”

  3. Social media admin will receive an e-mail with an option to connect an account. They have to click the “Continue” button in the e-mail.

  4. Social media admin has to type their name and click the “Add Instagram Account” button.

  5. They need to log in with their Facebook credentials, choose a profile to connect, etc., as previously demonstrated.

After a successful connection, users are able to see collaborators on the list:

Accounts that are already connected are also listed:

Tracking Story and Tag Mentions in Your Campaigns

Once you connect your Instagram Accounts, the Story and Tag Mentions will automatically populate for all of your Creators in all of your Campaigns which fulfill both of the following criteria:

  1. Campaign's Brand Profile references the Instagram Business Account which you've connected (in this example - Tagger)

  2. AND Creator who has mentioned your Brand is hired in this Campaign.

Functionalities and Limitations

This functionality allows you to see if the Creators in your Campaign are mentioning your Brand in their Stories and Posts. You will also have a chance to see the asset of the Story for the first 24 hours from its creation, as it expires after 24 hours.

In order to comply with Facebook's requirements, there are a few limitations that you need to be aware of:

  • You will only be able to see the Story assets for the first 24 hours from their creation. This means that after 24 hours, Tagger will display a placeholder in place of the actual Instagram Story.

  • The Story and Tag Mentions will be available in Campaigns, Profiles, and Signals reports, based on the profile they mention. They will not be available in Discovery.

  • You will not have access to any Stories that fail to properly mention an Instagram account that we have appropriate permissions for. This means that stories won't be pulled based on keywords.

  • You will only have access to Stories and Posts created by Creators that are in Your Campaigns.

  • You will only have access to Stories and Posts created by Creators with Instagram Creator/Business Account.

  • You will not be able to see historical Story Mentions that were created before Your Instagram Account was connected.

Once you connect your Instagram Accounts, additional Story Mentions can be added to your existing Campaigns, as they will not be restricted by your Campaigns' keywords settings.
