Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an additional layer of security that requires users to verify themselves using a second factor after entering a username and password. As part of Tagger's effort to be an industry leader in data security, users are able to choose between two methods of 2FA; SMS (text message) or an authenticator app.

On Tagger, knowledge of the password counts as one factor. The second factor is either a code sent through text or a code generated by a mobile device.

How does 2FA work in Tagger?

Upon logging into Tagger, users are asked for a second authentication factor. There are currently two methods of 2FA on Tagger:

  • Text Message: A one-time token sent live to your verified phone number.

  • Authenticator App: Time-based one-time passwords (OTPs) generated by an application on your mobile phone.

Both methods use short, unique 6-digit codes that are valid for a short period of time.

How to Setup 2FA

All Tagger users, Creators, and Collaborators can configure 2FA for their accounts. To do so, head to User Settings, then select "Security".

- Tagger Tip -

Tagger Admins are able to require that 2FA is mandatory for the whole organization. Tagger Admins are able to learn more here.

Step 1:

Select the User Icon then "User Settings".

Step 2:

Select "Security"

Step 3:

Enter your Tagger password.

Step 4:

Select "Enable two-factor authentication"

Step 5:

Select a 2FA method:

Set up 2FA via Text

Step 6:

Verify a phone number, including the country code. Please note, only valid phone numbers are allowed.

Step 7:

A text message sent to that phone number will contain a code.

Step 8:

Type the code into Tagger.

Step 9:

Copy or download the recovery codes.

  • Please note, there are 8 recovery codes, each code can only be used once. It is important to download or copy these codes and store them in a safe place.

- Tagger Tip -

🌍 SMS texts sent through this 2FA method are automatically localized and translated by our SMS API provider based on the country code selected in step 6.

Setup 2FA via Authenticator App

Before 2FA is set up using an authenticator app, users need to have a smartphone with a two-factor app that supports OTP tokens. Examples include:

Step 7:

After downloading the authentication app of choice, select "Continue".

Step 8:

Open the mobile app and use the phone camera to scan the QR code on Tagger.

  • Alternatively, type in the secret code from under the QR code into the app.

This action populates a 6 digit code in the authenticator app.

Step 9:

Type 6-digit code from the mobile app and type it into Tagger.

Step 10:

Copy or download the recovery codes.

  • Please note, there are 8 recovery codes, each code can only be used once. It is important to download or copy these codes and store them in a safe place.

2FA in Action

After typing your password, the user is requested to provide a code delivered using a second factor: SMS text or authenticate through an app.

If there is no access to the mobile device with the authenticator app or phone number that is set up in Tagger, one of the recovery codes can also be used instead.
